FBI Will Investigate Foreclosure Practices

Even the FBI is getting involved in the investigation against lending companies and the increasing amounts of homes that are being foreclosed on. This is in addition to effort by attorneys general across the country that are conducting their own research, like Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott who stopped the foreclosure of 30 homes already this month. He, like his colleagues, want to change the way foreclosures are handled and provide more help for borrowers.

Accusations of mishandling foreclosures came out just after reports of filings for this year. They showed that within the first six months, as compared to last year, foreclosures had increased 24 percent. One supposed problem in lending agencies is agents that sign off on foreclosures without ever looking at the paperwork, an act called "robo-signing" that is currently being investigated.

FBI agents are being called in to investigate possible criminal actions conducted by the financial industry that could have attributed to the mortgage foreclosure crisis. These agents will need to determine whether lending agencies mishandled paperwork with intentional negligence or were simply overwhelmed by the massive amounts of reports coming in.
