Local YMCA to File for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

This week, spokesperson with The Beaumont Metropolitan YMCA has announced that it will file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and stop all operations.  The decision was reached by the YMCA's Board of Directors after exploring all options to remain in operation. At this time, the bankruptcy filing is pending approval from the Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

The closing date for the facility has not yet been set. However, members will be able to use the Mall facility until November 1, 2010.  Manager Patty Tanner said that she has started to tell members about the bankruptcy and that it has been hard.  Tanner said, "I started telling them yesterday - and they're sad because they care about their Y and we're a small community - but a strong community."

According to board members, this particular YMCA was too small and was not receiving enough community support, which caused financial hardship.
